Commonly, colour masterbatch is a mixture of certain kinds of thermoplastic carrier (i.e. PA, PP, PE), types of additives & fillers, and more importantly pigment. Pigment for most of the colours (red, yellow, green, blue, etc) are mostly in liquid form. However, for carbon black masterbatch, the pigment is in solid form as carbon black powder. Carbon black powder is produced from incomplete burning of organic matters, usually coal, heavy oil or natural gas, etc. Nowadays, carbon black powder can also be obtained by burning natural organic matters, such as rice husk, etc.
In order to produce carbon black masterbatch, thermoplastic carrier, carbon black powder and additives (for lubrication, etc) will mix, melt and knead together within the twin screw extruder and then pelletized. Four types of pelletizing methods can be used for producing carbon black masterbatch, depending on the exact formulations and material property requirements: water strand pelletizing, water ring hot-face pelletizing, air cooling strand pelletizing and under/in water pelletizing.
